Once again this year and in the context of the International day against LGTBI-phobia in sport, FC Barcelona are showing their commitment to sporting values as an instrument for social change. To coincide with the date, the Club promotes and participates in different initiatives that highlight the importance of respect and equality in sport.

After the successes of last season, the Club are organising another sports day for the staff at the Ciutat Esportiva for a second consecutive year. The initiative further establishes it as a space for togetherness and awareness among the blaugrana workforce.

The symbolic event will take place on 23 February. Those participating will be able to express their rejection towards LGBTQ+phobia in sport through playing matches of football with mixed teams, as a show of equality and respect both on and off the pitch.

LGBTQ+phobia can deeply affect those who receive it, leading to emotional consequences such as anxiety or depression, as well as affecting their social, work and family life. Within this context, the Club doubles down on sport as an instrument for change, with the aim of creating an inclusive environment in which people feel respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

February 19, in memory of Justin Fashanu

Every February 19 since 2010, the International day against LGBTI-phobia in sport has been commemorated in memory of the black English player Justin Fashanu, who was the first to publicly declare his homosexuality in 1990. Despite being a talented footballer with a great future, he suffered rejection and discrimination both on and off the pitch, and ultimately ended up committing suicide at the age of 37. His legacy is the Justin Fashanu Foundation, which fights against homophobia, racism and mental health problems among footballers.
