As there have been no real goals to vote on, during lockdown our ‘Goal of the Month’ vote has instead been for the best ever scored in that month. And Leo Messi goals have topped the ranking every time, and May was no exception. The winner in our latest poll was his amazing solo effort in the Copa del Rey Final of 2015 against Athletic Club, when his impossible move Camp Nou left mouths agape all around the planet.
The opening goal from that cup final was able to beat some seriously hot opposition. There was Ronald Koeman’s winner against Sampdoria in the Wembley 1992 European Cup Final, the 'Iniestazo' at Stamford Bridge in 2009 and the same Messi’s header in the Rome 2009 final.
The goal against Bilbao amassed almost 50% of the votes on the Spanish, Catalan, English and French versions of the official website.
