Lamine Yamal never tires of breaking records. And this time he has done it on one of the biggest stages in world football: the World Cup. The young Barça star has become a world champion with the Spanish national team. In doing so, he has become the youngest player ever to win both the European Championships and the World Cup, at 19 years and six days old. Yet another milestone to add to his growing collection.
Before turning twenty
The Barça winger has not even reached the age of 20 and already has the two biggest international competition player can win at national-team level. What is more, he has claimed both titles at the first attempt. A 100% success rate, while playing a leading role and making a decisive impact.
His first major success with Spain came in the summer of 2024, when Luis de la Fuente’s side won the UEFA European Championships in Germany. The Catalan born talent was named Best Young Player of the Tournament, received the award for the Best Goal for his strike in the semi-final against France, and was selected in the Team of the Tournament. All of this at just 17 years of age.
Now, at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Lamine Yamal has added the title of world champion to his list of honours. Barça’s number 10 scored one goal during the tournament and played a crucial role for Luis de la Fuente’s team, constantly unsettling defenders and drawing opponents towards him. A trademark feature of his game.
Alongside Cubarsí among the youngest World Cup finalists
It is also worth highlighting that Lamine Yamal became the third-youngest player ever to appear in a World Cup final, behind only Pelé (17 years and 249 days, in 1958) and Giuseppe Bergomi (18 years and 210 days, in 1982). Joining him on that list is fellow Barça player Pau Cubarsí, who, at 19 years and 178 days old, moved into fourth place, surpassing Kylian Mbappé.
