There isn’t a day that goes by without him making headlines. This Wednesday, against PSG, Lamine Yamal set another record for youngness in the Champions League by becoming the player under 19 years of age with the most appearances in Europe’s top club competition. He has now played 24 matches, surpassing the 23 games Warren Zaïre-Emery had played before turning 19.
Most Champions League games before turning 19.
Fittingly, Lamine Yamal achieved this new record at Montjuïc while facing none other than Zaïre-Emery himself, who stopped adding to this tally on March 8, when he turned 19.
Pau Cubarsí draws level with Bojan
Also noteworthy is Pau Cubarsí’s rise to third place in the same ranking. He already has 18 Champions League matches to his name before his 19th birthday, equalling another young talent from club history: Bojan Krkić. Both Lamine (who will turn 19 next July) and Cubarsí (in January) still have time to add to their numbers.
Lamine Yamal the record-breaker
Barça’s No. 10 has already shattered a whole series of milestones in Europe’s elite competition. He holds the record as the youngest Barça player to debut in the Champions League (16 years and 68 days), the youngest ever starter in the history of the competition (16 years and 83 days), the youngest assist provider (16 years and 153 days), the youngest footballer to play in a knockout tie (16 years and 223 days), and the youngest to reach 10 appearances in the competition (16 years and 278 days), among others.
