10 stats from the 2018/19 La Liga season

Below we review some important stats from this league campaign, another championship that closes with Barça as the main protagonist

Leaders in possession and passes

Ernesto Valverde's team were the top team in the championship in terms of possession with an average of 64.79% per game. Barça were also the team that passed the most (25,310) and completed the most passes (22,337). Additionally, four of the top five players in the League with most passes are from Barça: Rakitic (2,535), Sergio Busquets (2,393), Piqué (2,390) and Jordi Alba (2,361), are only surpassed by Mandi (2,578).

Player Team Passes
1- Aissa Mandi Real Betis 2578
2- Ivan Rakitic FC Barcelona 2535
3- Sergio Busquets FC Barcelona 2393
4- Gerard Piqué FC Barcelona 2390
5- Jordi Alba FC Barcelona 2361

30 players used

During the 38 games, Ernesto Valverde used a total of 30 players: Ter Stegen, Cillessen, Semedo, Piqué, Rakitic, Sergio, Todibo, Coutinho, Arthur, Suárez, Messi, Dembélé, Rafinha, Malcom, Lenglet, Murillo, Jordi Alba, Prince, Sergi Roberto, Aleñá, Vidal, Umtiti, Vermaelen, Denis Suárez, Munir, Riqui Puig, Abel Ruiz, Collado, Wague and Carles Pérez. Barça are the team that have used the most players along with Huesca and Real Sociedad.

Piqué and Ter Stegen, the most played

The Barça defender had one of his best seasons, and featured for a total of 3,150 minutes. Ter Stegen was the most used Barça player in the League. The German goalkeeper was once again a key player with 16 clean sheets and a total of 85 stoppages (72.6%).

Leo Messi: Total participation

Once again, the Argentinian was the best player in the championship. Messi was, for the third consecutive year and sixth in history, the top scorer in the League with 36 goals, meaning the Pichichi is his. He also delivered the most assists with 13 (the same as Sarabia), the fifth time he's finished top of that particular list. Furthermore, Messi generated most chances (92), had most shots on goal (87), had most total shots (171), and was the player who won his side most points (18) thanks to his goals.

Jordi Alba, played in the most games

The left-back participated in the most games, 36, of which 32 were as a starter and four were as a substitute. In 2018/19, he scored two goals and delivered eight assists.

Insatiable until the end

If Valverde's Barça have shone this season in the league, they've done so until the final whistle of each match. There have been several games in which Barça have managed to score important goals in the final 15 minutes, with 26 goals (30% of the total) being scored during this period, the most for a team in the domestic championship.

4th consecutive win at the Bernabéu in the League

The stadium of the eternal rival continues to be synonymous with victory, Barça beating Real Madrid in the League at the Santiago Bernabéu for the fourth consecutive season. From the 2015/16 campaign (0-4), every visit has ended in victory: 2-3 in the 2016/17 season, 0-3 in 2017/18, and 0-1 in 2018/19 thanks to a great goal by Rakitic.

The ability to react has been key

Barça were the highest scoring team in the League with 90 goals (27 more than Madrid with 63), and the team that were ahead for the most minutes across the season (1,396). They also earned the most points (22) after being in a losing position. That demonstrates the great capacity of the team to react at crucial moments.

Huesca and Sevilla, the preferred victims

The two teams that Barça scored most goals against in the League were Huesca and Sevilla, with eight each. They were followed by Betis (7), and Real Madrid, Espanyol, Rayo, Villarreal and Levante with six.

Most ever points ahead of Real Madrid

In this campaign, Valverde's men have asserted their authority over their main competitors, leaving Real Madrid 19 points behind them, the greatest historical difference between the two teams in the League. Barça are also the first team in the history of the League to win two consecutive league titles with a difference of more that 10 points with respect to the team that finished in second place (in this case, Atlético Madrid): 14 points in 2017/18 and 11 in 2018/19.
