Barça to face Celta in the Copa del Rey round of 16

The first leg will be played on Thursday, January 3 in Vigo at 7.00pm CET at the Balaídos Stadium; the second leg at Camp Nou will be the following week

FC Barcelona will face Celta Vigo in the round of 16 of the 2017/18 Copa del Rey, following Tuesday’s draw, which was held by the Spanish Football Federation in Madrid.

The first leg will be played at the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos in Vigo on Thursday, January 4 at 7.00pm CET. The return leg at Camp Nou has been set for the following week.

Barça qualified for the last 16 after beating Murcia, 8–0 on aggregate, in the last 32. Celta qualified for the round of 16 by knocking out Eibar, 3–1 on aggregate.

The last time Barça and Celta faced off in the Copa del Rey came in the 2000/01 semifinals, which Celta won, 4–2 on aggregate. The second match, held on June 24, 2001, was Pep Guardiola's final game for FC Barcelona.

Barça and Celta have played six Copa del Rey ties, with Barça going through to the next round on four occasions.

The draw was an open draw, meaning there were no seeds and any team could potentially have been matched up with any other. Thus, Barça avoided fellow Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atlético in the next round, as well as Valencia, which is currently in second place in La Liga, five points behind Barça.

Barça is looking for its fourth straight Copa del Rey title this season, a feat which hasn’t been achieved by any club since the 1930s.

The full draw went as follows:

Formentera vs. Alavés
Lleida vs. Atlético de Madrid
Numancia vs. Real Madrid
Celta vs. FC Barcelona
Cádiz vs. Sevilla
Leganés vs. Villarreal
Las Palmas vs. Valencia
Espanyol vs. Levante
