On 1 May 2005, exactly twelve years ago, Leo Messi scored his first ever goal for FC Barcelona (against Albacete). He was just 17 at the time, and now 29 he has won a major title for every year of his life and scored a staggering 502 goals.

Those goals have been celebrated in all kinds of different ways, and some of the images now form a part of modern club folklore.

01/05/2005. FCB 2-0 Albacete

Five games before the end of the first league of the Rijkaard era, Barça needed three points against Albacete. Leo Messi came on for the last three minutes with the score at 1-0 and after making it 2-0 ran straight for his role model of the time, Ronaldinho.

27/05/2009. FCB 2-0 Manchester United

Pained at missing out on the Paris final in 2006, Messi led the team to another Champions League final in Rome. He headed home a Xavi cross to confirm victory against the Red Devils and the picture of him kissing the club crest is now an iconic image.

16/05/2010. FCB 4-0 Valladolid

FC Barcelona needed 99 points to win a second consecutive title and they confirmed it with a win against Valladolid. Leo Messi scored twice that day, and famously ran to kiss his mother after getting the second.

29/10/2011. FCB 5-0 Mallorca

After completing a hat-trick against Dudu Aouate, the Argentinian ran to the camera and counted to three – a tremendous image that got the whole world noticing.

07/11/2012. Celtic 2-1 FCB

This was one of Leo Messi’s most iconic celebrations of all, coming just five days after the birth of his first son, Thiago. Unfortunately the goal wasn't enough to secure a win in Glasgow Glasgow, but he celebrated the strike with his famous thumb-sucking gesture.

23/03/2014. Madrid 3-4 FCB

The Argentine was the hero at the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring the equaliser to make it 2-2 and celebrating by kissing the badge in ‘enemy’ territory.

22/11/2014. FCB 5-1 Sevilla

A stunning Messi hat-trick took his career tally to 253 goals and overtook Telmo Zarra as the top goalscorer in Liga history. Raised for the 'bumps' by the rest of the team, he’d done that in the remarkably short time of just 289 matches.

11/01/2015. FCB 3-1 Atlètic

Here come the trident! Leo Messi, Neymar Jr and Luis Suárez all scored in this game against Atlético Madrid and went on to lead the team to a second historic treble, this time under Luis Enrique.

05/04/2017. FCB 3-0 Sevilla

Leo Messi’s image was seen around the world after this goal, making the warrior sign on his face in support of the #paralosvalientes charity campaign for cancer led by the FC Barcelona Foundation, Leo Messi Foundation, Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu and the IESE.

What a Sant Jordi and what a win in El Clásico. Leo Messi made it to a staggering 500 goals for Barça and marked the occasion by removing his shirt and creating an image that will go down in club history. What a hero!
