Messi is second in FIFA's The Best prize | VICTOR SALGADO - FCB

Leo Messi has finished second in the running for The Best prize presented by FIFA to the best player in the world. This is the first year FIFA's new prize has been awarded. Previously, FIFA had collaborated with France Football and presented the joint FIFA Ballon d'Or. Messi is the player with the most FIFA Ballon d'Or's with a record of five wins to his name. The Ballon d'Or is still presented by France Football whilst FIFA have ended this partnership and renamed the old FIFA World Player award as The Best.

At Monday's award ceremony in Zurich, Cristiano Ronaldo was named The Best, followed by Messi and Griezmann in second and third place, respectively. Even though this is the first year this prize has been given, Messi has been amongst the three best players in the world since 2007. Between 2009 and 2012, the Argentinian was the best player in the world, further proof he is the best of all time.

Four Barça players made it into FIFA's best starting XI for 2016 — Piqué, Iniesta, Suárez and Messi. Their places are well deserved following a 2016 in which the four stars won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup with FC Barcelona. Moreover, Messi played excellently in helping Argentina finish second in the Copa América. The Argentinian player scored 52 goals for club and country, whilst Luis Suárez won the European Golden Shoe with a total of 47 goals.

This is what FIFA's FIFPro World 11 looks like: Neuer (Bayern); Dani Alves (Juventus), Ramos (Real Madrid), Piqué (FC Barcelona), Marcelo (Real Madrid); Modric (Real Madrid), Kroos (Real Madrid) and Iniesta (FC Barcelona); Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Suárez (FC Barcelona) and Leo Messi (FC Barcelona).

Iniesta apologised for Barça's players not attending The Best gala in person in a video in which he thanked FIFA for the recognition: “We would like to thank FIFA for being chosen in this starting eleven and apologise for not being able to attend the gala in person as we have a crucial Copa del Rey game on Wednesday against Athletic Club”.
