The team could play up to eleven matches during the first month of the year | MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

FC Barcelona face a busy start to the new year with a host of matches starting with a Copa del Rey last-16 first leg match against Athletic Club. As well as an already packed fixture list, the number of games could increase should the Catalans progress past the Basques in the cup.

After the trip to San Mamés, Barça face another tough game on the road against Villarreal for Week 17 of La Liga. Then, just days later comes the return leg of the cup tie at the Camp Nou on 11 January. With little time to catch their breath in between, Barça then host Las Palmas for another league match on 14 January.

Four days later, should Barça have progressed from the tie against Athletic, a cup quarter final tie awaits. The theme of playing two games in a week would continue as a trip to Eibar awaits on 22 January for Week 19 of La Liga.

The hypothetical Copa quarter final second leg is scheduled for 25 January, before Week 20 of La Liga away at Real Betis on 29 January.

The same intensity could follow into the early parts of February if Barça reach the semis of the cup, with a potential two-legged tie either side of the league match against Athletic Club on 4 February.

Here's a look at the full calendar for the month of January, with a handful of games still to be confirmed:
