Rhein-Neckar Löwen 35-34 Barça Lassa: Champions League opens with defeat in Germany (35-34)

Time runs out on an impressive fightback from seven down, as the European campaign gets off to a losing yet nevertheless promising start

Barça Lassa failed to get off to a winning start in the EHF Champions  League as they went down at Rhein-Neckar Löwen 35-34.

The Catalans were seven-down at one point, but despite an impressive comeback and especially fine displays from Aleix Gómez and N’Guessan (7 and 11 goals) they were unable to go the extra inch and claim what was almost an impressive win.

And the Germans’ Icelandic keeper Dagur Sigurðsson was very much to ‘blame’ for that – he was simply outstanding this evening.

So with 2 draws and 3 defeats, FCB still have yet to win at one of the trickiest venues in European handball in recent times – home of the Bundesliga champions of 2016 and 2017,

But there’s still a long way to go, with 13 more games in the group yet to play. In the meantime, it’s back to the Liga Asobal on Sunday, with the first home game of the tournament against Ciudad Encantada
