Brazil and Uruguay win, Argentina draw

Neymar scores, Suárez makes a couple of assists while captain Mascherano has to settle for a point

FC Barcelona’s South American stars enjoyed positive results in their first of two World Cup qualifiers on Thursday night.

Luis Suárez, as ever, played a prominent part in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Venezuela with two assists. The first set up Lodeiro on 29 minutes before Cavani made it 2-0. Suárez then created the PSG striker’s second goal to maintain Uruguay’s place at the top of the South American standings with 19 points.

Neymar Jr scored the first goal in Brazil’s 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia, before Coutinho, Filipe Luis, Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino got themselves on the scoresheet.

In the absence of Leo Messi, Javier Mascherano wore the captain’s armband for Argentina’s draw against Peru. Funes Mori put the Albiceleste ahead, before Guerrero brought the score level. Argentina thought they had the win sealed when Higuain made it 2-1 but a late penalty saw the two teams share the spoils.

The Barça boys will be back in action with their respective sides once again from next week. Check out the full match schedule here.
