The coach of Barça Legends, Albert ‘Chapi’ Ferrer, has called upon a total of 18 players for Saturday's match at Old Trafford against the Manchester United Legends, kick-off 4pm CET. They are: Patrick Kluivert, Éric Abidal, Xavi Guzmán, Jesús Angoy, Gaizka Mendietta, Juliano Belletti, Andoni Goicoetxea, Frédéric Déhu, Luis García, Sánchez Jara, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, Simao Sabrosa, José Edmílson and Edgar Davids. In addition, Juan Carlos Moreno, Sergi Barjuan, Aloisio Pires and Jofre Mateu will debut and it will be Chapi Ferrer’s first game as coach after he replaced José Mari Bakero on the bench.
Manchester United Legends, trained by Bryan Robson, have the following players in their squad: Russell Beardsmore, Jesper Blomqvist, Wes Brown, Bojan Djordjic, Dion Dublin, Quinton Fortune, Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, Ji- Sung Park, Karel Poborsky, Louis Saha, Mikael Silvestre, BenThornley, Raimond van der Gouw, Edwin van der Saar, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Danny Webber and Dwight Yorke.
The match will be particularly emotional as it pays tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks that the two cities have suffered recently. That is why the Barça players won’t have their names on the backs of their shirts, just ‘Barcelona,’ as the first team had against Betis recently. By the same token, United’s legends will only have ‘Manchester’ on theirs. There will also be a minute’s silence before kick-off and every player will wear a black armband.
All proceeds will go towards the construction of the Hospital Sant Joan de Deu, a pioneering project in which the FC Barcelona Foundation, the Leo Messi Foundation and the IESE Business School are involved.
FC Barcelona values the players who have worn the shirt of the Club. The Legends project aims to contribute to the globalisation of the Barça brand and its values through former players. This initiative will see several games played and the organisation of parallel events in different parts of the world.
