FC Barcelona's flying start to the season was cut short on Wednesday when they were beaten at home by Paris Saint-Germain. That was in the Champions League, but on the domestic front they remain unbeaten and moved to the top of the table last weekend thanks to a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad coupled with a heavy loss for Real Madrid in their local derby with Atlético.

Real Madrid have hopefully only temporarily regained the lead on the back of a 3-1 win over Villarreal on Saturday.

Sevilla

This new weekend of Liga fixtures, and the last before another international break, takes Barça to the Sánchez-Pizjuán (4.15pm CEST on Sunday), home of Sevilla, never an easy trip, although in recent years the Andalusians have not been performing quite as strongly as we have become used to. After 21 consecutive seasons finishing in the top half of La Liga, they have been in the lower half for the last three, and last season they came dangerously close to slipping down to the second division.

2025/26 got off to another poor start for the all-whites, but they have won three of their last five games, and lost only one, to currently stand ninth in the table, their most recent result being a 1-0 win at Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

One of the many attractions of this fixture is the chance to catch up with Alexis Sánchez, who was at Barça from 2011 to 2014. After periods in England, France and Italy, the Chilean forward is back in La Liga, now 36 years of age, and looks to be enjoying a second youth at Sevilla.

Head to head

Considering Sevilla are typically one of the biggest sides in La Liga, Barça have an extraordinary strong record against them. They are currently on a run of seven consecutive wins, including a 5-1 win at home and a 4-1 win away last season. Lewandowski, Fermín, Raphinha and Eric Garcia were the goalscorers at the Pizjuan last time.

Incredibly, we have to go all the way back to 2025, a whole decade, to find the last time that Sevilla beat Barça in the league, either at home or away, although they have won a couple of games in the Copa del Rey in that period.

So history is very much tipped the blaugrana way in this fixture...

Team news

Barça are again struggling with a depleted squad, with all of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gavi, Fermín, Joan Garcia and Raphinha again out for this one.

And there has been an additional setback with Lamine Yamal, whose groin pain has flared up again, meaning he will be out of action for the next two to three weeks..

The home side should certainly be without Alfon González and Tanguy Nianzou, while there are doubts concerning Joan Jordán and Adnan Januzaj.
