Women’s Gamper to be screened live on Discord
Next Thursday 24 August, the Barça Women have what is always one of the most special fixtures of the season, the Joan Gamper Trophy. The opposition in the 7pm CEST kick-off will be Juventus Women, the same team that played in the first ever women’s edition of the traditional blaugrana season opener in 2021.
Before the start of the official season and with the many successes of 2022/23 still fresh in the memory, including the club’s second UEFA Women’s Champions League, Barça want to get as many fans involved, wherever they might be in the world. So, for the first time, the Joan Gamper match between Barça and Juventus can be watched live on Discord.
Discord is a platform with more than 150 million registered users, who can use the service to connect and interact with each other, and even generate their own content. The club is using the platform to reach out to this community with a particular focus on emerging technologies, e-sports, Web3, and much more.
Pioneers on Discord
FC Barcelona’s presence on this platform made it the first LaLiga club to have a Discord server and in just two months it had already amassed over 60,000 members, who could use it to engage with the club in real time.
The broadcast of the Barça v Juventus Joan Gamper game now makes Barça the first football club to broadcast one of its games live to the whole world on Discord.
The match stream continues the club’s digital strategy and follows on from the success of the ‘Empowerment’ auction of the second masterpiece in the club’s history, an NFT inspired by Alexia Putellas and launched in association with World of Women. It was sold last July for $300,231.36 in an auction at OpenSea, making it the sixth highest valued NFT sold ever on Polygon.
Discord is available worldwide without geographic restrictions, so users can use the platform to watch the Women’s Gamper from anywhere in the world provided they have an internet connection.
The FC Barcelona Discord channel (@FCBarcelonaOfficial) was created in June 2023 and is part of the club’s intention to create digital entertainment contents, to reach out to new audiences and to foster closer ties with new generations.
