Youngest captains for 15 years

With veterans Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba all departed, new captains have been needed at Barça. Ter Stegen has already been one of the four ever since Piqué left, and he has now be joined by two youngsters in Ronald Araujo (24) and Frenkie de Jong (26) as third and fourth choices. 

Youngest since 2008/09

With an average age of 28, that's the youngest foursome since the treble-winning 2008/09 season, when Carles Puyol (31), Xavi Hernández (28), Víctor Valdés (26) and Andrés Iniesta (24) averaged 27.25 years.

It's five years since any quartet of captains averaged less than 30 years, when the 2018/19 picks were Leo Messi, Busquets, Piqué and Sergi Roberto. 

Sergi Roberto continues 20-year legacy

Sergi Roberto will be first captain in what is his 16th season with the team. He's been one of the four ever since Andres Iniesta and Javier Mascherano departed in 2018, and has been slowly climbing up the ladder since.

He is preceded in the role by Busquets, Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Puyol, all of whom were La Masia graduates. And that tradition dating back two whole decades is set to be continued.
