It was formed officially as a Club section in September 1978 in the Catalan Third Division before reaching the First Division in 1979/80. After being dissolved the following season, the section returned four years later to yo-yo between divisions. From 2005/06 it become professional and now is one of the leading clubs in Spain and Europe.
