The Dutchman has played 93 games for FC Barcelona and is now an essential part of the midfield machine
How time flies! This Monday marks two whole years since Frenkie de Jong joined FC Barcelona. The Dutchman put pen to paper on 5 July 2019, although the deal had already been officially announced on January 23.
No fewer than 19,850 people were at the Camp Nou to get their first glimpse of the player wearing the Barça colours and appearing on the famous turf for the first time.
He made his official debut on August 16 away to Athletic Club, and went on to play 42 games, scoring two goals and giving four assists. But it has been in the season just ended, 2020/21, when we have truly seen the midfield starlet at his best.
In all competitions, he played in 51 games, scoring seven goals and giving nine assists. But it’s not just about stats, it’s also about the contribution he has made to the team in so many different ways and often in less familiar playing positions.
The 24-year-old has extraordinary skill and vision, and is one of the brightest young midfield prospects in the game.
