Barça 86–87 Iberostar Tenerife: Defeat to close the group stage

Two free throws by Fran Guerra 0.5 seconds from the end prevent Pesic's side from closing the group stage undefeated

Barça couldn't close the ACB group stage undefeated, but their loss against Iberostar Tenerife (86-87) didn't come until the very last second when two free throws from Fran Guerra gave the Islanders the win.

Having already qualified for the semis, Tomic, Hanga, Claver and Higgins were left out of the Barça side entirely, whilst Mirotic and Pangos didn't play a minute. After an even start (17-17, min 8), Txus Vidorreta's team gradually edged ahead, ending the first period 17-25 ahead. A minute before the break they were up by 15 (32-47, min 19).

Barça reaction

An immediate reaction from Barça, including 10 points from Kuric, saw them draw level soon after half-time (54-54, min 26), and they were still tied at the end of the third period (61-61, min 30).

Tenerife's seven unanswered points (64-71, min 33) looked to have taken the game away from the Catalans, but a mini-collapse gave Barça a lifeline and an eight-point stretch drew them level with two minutes to play (77-77, min 38).

Davies managed to put Barça back in front (83-82) with 17 seconds to play, however, Lundberg's heroics saw the pendulum swing once more with just eight seconds left. Davies (again) had Barça ahead (86-85) with only three seconds on the clock, but Fran Guerra forced a foul and, with his two free throws and 0.5 seconds left, ended Barça’s hopes.

The semifinals, to be played next Sunday, will be against the runner-up in Group B, and who is yet to be determined.
