When the draw last week brought together Athletic Club and FC Barcelona, it brought together two giants of the Copa del Rey. The Catalan club and the club from Bilbao in the Basque Country have won the competition 53 times between them, 30 for Barça and 23 for Athletic yet it will be the first time that they meet in a one off tie with the exception of the final.
The teams have met 24 times in the competition, eight of which have been finals. Over two legged ties Barça have made it through 11 times, Athletic five whilst in the final the blaugranes have lifted the trophy six times to los leones two.
The last time the two sides met for the title was in a memorable final in 2015 played at Camp Nou than ended with Barça as champions:
In 2012 Barça defeated Athletic 3-0 in the Vicente Calderón in Madrid in the final also.
Over the last 10 years the two have met five times in the competition with Barça victorious on each occasion. The last time they faced each other came in 2016/17 in the last 16 of the competition - a 2-1 defeat in San Mamés in the first leg inspired a comeback in the second leg at Camp Nou where a 3-1 win took the blaugranes into the quarter finals.
