Barça Academy Mexico City opens its doors at the Reforma Athletic Club

FC Barcelona now has its second Mexican school, following on from the one that opened in Puebla

Futbol Club Barcelona has opened in second permanent Barça Academy in Mexico, this time in the capital city. Mexico continues to be a key country in the club’s international expansion plans, where it already has the Barça Academy Puebla, now into its second season, and a series of Barça Academy Camps held at Easter and summer in different cities around the country. The new Barça Academy CDMX is located on the grounds of the historic Reforma Athletic Club, which has just celebrated its 125th anniversary.

There are now more than fifty Barça Academies around the world, and the Americas are home to a large proportion of them. The United States leads the way with ten, while there are five in Canada and now two in Mexico, and others in countries with a strong football tradition, including Colombia and Brazil.

The opening ceremony was attended by such guests as the international director of the Barça Academy project, Carles Martín; the director of Barça Academy America, Xavier Mondelo; the president of the Reforma Athletic Club, Carlos Vallejo; and the local project director of Barça Academy CDMX, Álex Álvarez, a coach with extensive experience working with the Barça soccer school. Each of them said a few words of welcome to the first families and players. After these institutional speeches there was a series of friendly games between the 150 players who are currently members of the academy.

The project in the Mexican capital has come out of the relations maintained over the last five years between FC Barcelona and its local partner, Catalunya Sports, which in the last half-decade has won the trust of 3,500 boys and girls who have been enjoying the training clinics regularly held in the cities of Guadalajara, Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico City, Puebla, Sant Luís Potosí, Acapulco and Cancun and that from this summer are also being held in Leon and Los Mochis. In the summer of 2019 more than 750 youngsters enjoyed sports camps throughout the country.

More than 50 permanent Barça Academy projects in the five continents

The Barça Academy is FC Barcelona’s own football school model directed at children, with the main objective being the integral training of its alumni. This football school model, exported internationally, intends to spread the Barça brand and transmit the working philosophy and values of the club around the world.

The schools works with its own unique model, based on the Barça methodology from the earliest levels through to the first team. It involves a creative, attacking style of play, and with the indispensible transmission of values: Respect, effort, humility, ambition and teamwork, with proven results.

Currently, FC Barcelona has more than 50 Barça Academy projects around the world, more than 180 Campuses and 50 Clinics, and a presence in 56 countries in five continents. It enjoys the participation of more than 45,000 children in the different activities that it runs.

The Barça Academy projects are divided into the Barça Escola in Barcelona, the Barça Academy Pro in Haikou (China) and New York (USA), the Barça Residency Academy Arizona (USA) and the other Barça Academies in all five continents.
