In recent days, Lieke Martens has been making major developments with her recovery from injury. The Dutch striker has started jogging more intensely, although in isolation from the rest of the team. Until now, she had solely been in the gym and pool after picking up a left toe injury at last summer’s World Cup.
“It hurt with every step” she says. “But after a few weeks in the gym and pool, I’ve been working in the right direction with the physios, although I still need more time. It’s a difficult injury to predict its recovery time and it’s mentally tough for me sometimes because I want to get back on the pitch but it’s impossible with this pain.”
“I feel I’m getting closer and really happy to be back on the pitch. I missed running.”
