Éric Abidal's farewell in 10 comments

The Frenchman, who was accompanied by the whole team, bid farewell to FC Barcelona this morning

Éric Abidal said goodbye to FC Bacelona this Thursday morning. During his emotional press conference, the Frenchman addressed his team-mates, the technical staff and the fans and he thanked them for their support. Here’s a selection of what we believe to be the best comments from today’s press conference:

1) “It’s quite a difficult day I have played here for six years, and I’ve been lucky to have marvelous team-mates, the best in the world. I’ve learned a lot from them.”

2) “Thanks to the players and the managers. The doctors and the physios, who have helped me through difficult moments. To doctor Medina, who has helped me for years. And thanks to my family.”

3) “When I got sick I had to objectives. The first was to fight for my family, so I could see my daughters grow up. The second was to play again. I would have liked to continue on here, but the Club doesn’t agree and I respect their decision.”

4) “I’m leaving but I’ll definitely be back, because I have a very interesting offer from the Club which I have to think over. Thank you for the gesture”

5) “A big thanks to all the fans for supporting me. I will always remember the fans.”

6) “My future? I currently need to finish my contract with Barça. I haven’t been made any offers and I have time to think about it. What’s important is the final match of the season.”

7) “It’s difficult to leave football, it changes your life.”

8) “I want to continue playing football because I’m healthy. If the doctors tell me that I’m risking my life, I’ll leave the sport, but that’s not the case at the moment.”

9) “I fought. It was my personal Champions League. It was a group victory, because my team-mates cheered me on and encouraged me. Thank you all, I couldn’t have fought by myself.”

10) “[What will I remember?] My first match with the Club, the day the doctors found the tumour, my return to the Camp Nou, the gesture of the team captains at Wembley, and especially, today.”
