He started playing as a defensive midfielder, but as time passed Guardiola repositioned him as a center back. Mascherano made 27 appearances in the league in his first season for Barça, in 2011/12 he made 31 appearances, and 25 in the following season. This year he’s featured 17 times for Barça in the league.
In total Mascherano has played 169 matches for Barça, 100 of which were league games, 25 Cup matches, 35 Champions League matches, 6 in the Spanish Super Cup, 1 in the European Super Cup and 2 in the Club World Cup. Only three Argentinians have made more appearances for Barça than Mascherano, they are Messi, Saviola and Zuviría.
