On August 18 2004, 10 years ago today, Samuel Eto’o and Deco made their first team debuts for the Club in a friendly to mark the centenary of Vilafranca.
Deco and Eto’o made their debuts in front of 3,000 people at the Camp d’Esports del Vilafranca del Penedès as Barça visited the club as part of their centenary celebrations. Not surprisingly, Barça ran out easy 0-6 winners against the amateurs, with goals from the two debutants -Eto’o grabbing a brace - Márquez, Giuly and Luis Garcia.
Goals on debuts
The performances from the both Deco and Eto’o were an encouraging sign for Rijkaard as he prepared for the new season. Deco, who played the full 90 minutes, was first to score, firing in a long range effort after just 12 minutes, w .hilst Eto’o opened his Barça account twenty minutes later and grabbed his second in the second half, after being set up by Deco before being taken off for the last quarter of an hour.
Title winning stars
Deco proved himself to be a commanding and committed midfielder and became one of the stars of Rijkaard’s Barça, winning six titles during his time at the Club, whilst Eto’o stayed until 2009, winning 10 titles and was part of the 2008/09 treble winning side.
