PSG and FC Barcelona have secured places in the last sixteen with two games in hand The French and Catalan clubs will now fight it out for the all-important top spot in the group
Tonight’s matches decided which teams will be going into the last sixteen from Group F. Paris Saint-Germain won 1-0 against APOEL at the Parc des Princes, while Barça got the better of Ajax, 2-0, at the Amsterdam Arena. PSG stay top of the group with 10 points and FCB are one behind on 9. That leaves the Dutch (2) and Cypriots (1) out of contention, and the best they can now hope for his third and a place in the Europa League.
For the two qualifiers, there is still the matter of winning the group to decide. And it’s no small matter, because it means avoiding any of the other seven group winners in the second round draw, as well as playing the second leg at home.
Laurent Blanc’s side entertain Ajax in Paris in their penultimate match, while Luis Enrique will be taking his side to Cyprus on Tuesday November 25. The most likely scenario is that things will go down to a direct encounter on December 10 when PSG come to the Camp Nou. If the two sides finish level on points, top spot will be decided on the two teams’ head-to-head record, with PSG currently 3-2 up following their win in Paris.
