Nikola Karabatic named 2014 world player of the year by Handball Planet
The FC Barcelona star came out tops in a vote among fans and a jury of experts
Another award for Nikola Karabatic. FC Barcelona’s French central back has been named world player of the year by specialist website Handball Planet.com following a vote by fans and 24 of the world’s top handball reporters.
2014 has been a terrific year for the player, with Barça winning every trophy at stake apart from the Champions League.
Karabatic has collected titles for the Liga Asobal, the Copa del Rey, the Catalan Super Cup, the Asobal Super Cup and the Superglobe with FC Barcelona as well being named to the Asobal Ideal VII 2013/14.
For his country, he helped France to glory in the European Championship played in Denmark, beating the host nation 41-32 in the final and being announced as MVP of the competition.
Lazarov and Sigurdsson among the best
Kiril Lazarov and Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson were both named to the Handball Planet ideal team, with Lazarov at right back and Sigurdsson at left wing.
Lazarov finished fourth overall in the player of the year ranking, while Barça’s Rutenka, Tomás, Sorhaindo and Viran Morros were also among the nominees for the team of the year.
