Real Madrid score nine, PSG win 3–2 at Marseille

Cristiano Ronaldo scored five goals as Madrid ran riot against Granada, while Barça’s Champions League opponents PSG took Le Classique in a dramatic victory over arch-rivals Marseille

In their first outing since losing the Clásico at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid bounced back with a resounding 9-1 victory over relegation candidates Granada. Gareth Bale broke the deadlock after 26 minutes and then Cristiano Ronaldo needed just eight minutes to complete a first half hat-trick. The Portuguese striker added two more after the break to score five goals in a single game for the first time in his career. A brace from Benzema and a Mainz own goal completed the rout, while Robert Ibáñez’s consolation goal for Granada was little more than an anecdote.

The win, coupled with Barça’s 1–0 victory at Celta, leaves Real Madrid four points adrift of the top of the table with nine games left to play.

Valencia held at home

Valencia have dropped from third to fourth after being held to a 0-0 draw at home to Villarreal, while Atlético have maintained their dwindling hopes of retaining the Liga title with a 2-0 win at last-placed Córdoba. Griezmann punched on a Zuculini gaffe to open the scoring after five minutes and Saúl extended the lead after 39.

A five-match winning streak came to end for Barça’s Spanish Cup Final opponents Athletic Club, who slumped to 2-0 defeat at in-form Sevilla. Aleix Vidal exploited a muddle in the Athletic defence to get the home side into an early lead, and Bacca made it two after 21 minutes.

PSG take thriller in Marseille

Paris Saint-Germain drew back twice from a goal down and then swiftly went ahead on an Jeremy Morel own goal on 51 minutes to take a huge 3–2 road win at arch-rivals Marseille in Ligue 1 action on Sunday.

Marseille’s Andre-Pierre Gignac netted twice in the first half as PSG were continually looking up. Blaise Matuidi got the first goal back for the Parisians on 35 minutes and Marquinhos tied it after the break just before a routine cross became a fluke goal that would stand to be the difference-maker.
