FC Barcelona-Inter Movistar: Cruel last minute defeat (2-3)

The blaugranes let slip a 2-0 lead and allow their Madrid rivals to claim top spot in the table

Disappointment in the Palau as Barça went down to defeat in a game where top spot in the table was at stake. All seemed set for a home victory with Marc Carmona’s side flying at 2-0 up ater just 12 minutes. However, a comeback from Inter saw the visitors claim victory in the dying minutes of the contest.

The two teams began the contest with the mutual respect between them all too plain to see. Nevertheless, the blaugranes settled into their stride quickly and Wilde rattled the Inter crossbar after just three minutes. Six minutes later Barça were 1-0 up - Batería firing home against his former club. In just the 12th minute the home side doubled their advantage when Lin rounded off an excellent move involving Wilde. The visitors called a time out and that seemed to reinvigorate them as Barça keeper Paco Sedano was called upon to make several important saves. The Palau sensed an important victory on the cards with Carmona’s team taking their 2-0 advantage into the break.

Inter comeback

Unfortunately, the second half was a different story. Inter Movistar pressed to get themselves back into the contest and they succeeded. Ortiz first in the 23rd minute and then Rivillos two minutes later dragged the visitors back into contention with well taken goals. Barça went through a tough spell where nerves appeared to get the better of them. Wilde struck the woodwork for the third time in the match with just five minutes remaining with the encounter seemingly headed for a draw. Inter threw caution to the wind, sacrificing their goalkeeper in the final minutes and the gamble paid off with Rivillos scoring the winner with just 58 seconds remaining. Inter now top the table after 30 matches of the league campaign.
