Rival Watch: Juventus win the Coppa Italia

Juventus have claimed a second trophy of the season after beating Lazio in the final of the Coppa Italia. Barça’s opponents in the Champions League final on 6 June in Berlin were already league champions and on Wednesday they added the Italian Cup to their honours list with a 2-1 win in extra time over Lazio. La Vecchia Signora claimed the trophy for the first time since 1995 and in doing so moved past Roma on the all time list of Coppa Italia winners.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side got off to the worst possible start in the final when they fell behind after just four minutes when Lazio’s Radu put the Romans ahead from a well placed header from a set piece. However, the Serie A champions did not panic and just seven minutes later Giorgio Chiellini drew the side from Turin level, also from a set piece. There were plenty of chances for both sides in the remainder of the first half and in the second 45 minutes to take the title yet the game ended 1-1 at the final whistle.

With just five minutes of extra time played, striker Alessandro Matri pounced on a loose ball in the box to make it 2-1 to Juventus. Moments later Lazio’s Djordjevic had a great chance to level things up but his effort came back not just off one post but off both of Storari’s goal and as such la Juve held on for the victory. The Italians now head to Berlin with the double already in their pockets and with the incentive of claiming the league, Cup and Champions League treble for the first time in their history.
