Luis Suárez and Neymar Jr may be the second and third prongs of FC Barcelona’s so-called trident, but on Saturday night against Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez in Madrid, they once again showed everyone that, for now, they are the sharpest and most dangerous weapons out there.
The duo scored all of their team's goals — yes, again — as the Catalans won 2–0 for their third straight triumph in La Liga, allowing them to stay tied with Real Madrid at the top of the table. Barça also snapped a two-game road losing streak in the league while securing a clean sheet for the first time since 29 August, a span of seven games.
Sergi Roberto, making his first appearance after missing the last two games with an injury, assisted on both goals.
In the 37th minute Suárez got Barça on the scoreboard for the second straight game, corralling a spectacular no-look pass from Roberto and then finishing with aplomb.
Suárez’s goal was his fifth straight for the Catalans following his hat-trick last week and a late goal the week before. The score came after Neymar effortlessly dispatched a defender along the side-line and crossed in to Roberto, who spun with his back to the goal as he heeled underneath to Suárez.
Roberto’s pass was a sparkling flash of showtime football, albeit an uncharacteristic display of flamboyance for the midfielder, who has been steadily gaining favour in the eyes of head coach Luis Enrique and whose performance on Saturday only served to further bolster his case for more playing time.
In the 58th minute Neymar made it 2–0 when he one-timed a perfectly lobbed cross from Roberto and beat Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita at the far post.
Neymar’s goal gives him nine on the season, keeping him atop the league goal scoring list.
Neymar and Suárez have now scored every single one of Barça’s last 14 goals — seven each — in the team’s last six league games going back to 20 September. The duo have literally picked up all of the slack stemming from the absence of Lionel Messi, who has been out with a knee injury for over a month and, not surprisingly, was the last Barça player other than Neymar and Suárez to score for Barça in La Liga.
