FC Barcelona Women v Atlético Women: Cruel final (3-2)

Despite a second half resurgence, three goals from as many shots from the side from Madrid made the difference

FC Barcelona Women suffered a painful 3-2 defeat in the Copa de la Reina final at the hands of Atletico Women on Sunday afternoon.

After missing out on the league title, Xavi Llorens’ side were eager to add silverware to their campaign, but it was not to be.

The final started in the worst possible fashion for the Catalans, going a goal down inside eight minutes with a strike from Sosa. But the nightmare start was about to get worse as, on 15 minutes, the club from Madrid doubled their lead through Mesegur with an unstoppable effort going beyond the reach of Sandra Paños .

Barça began to get into their normal rhythm shortly after but it just was not to be their day. Despite their pressure, it was Atletico who would grab the next goal to make the mountain even steeper, as Esther tucked away a header on the half-hour mark.

Llorens’ side needed half-time, and their emergence for the second period saw a far more refreshed attitude. Not before long, Jenni Hermoso narrowed the deficit to give Barça hope. And seven minutes later, the same player brought the score to 3-2, giving hopes of a miraculous comeback.

Barça never lost hope and continued to push for a leveler, but it was not to be. Atletico’s three goals from their opening three shots eventually proved decisive while Barça end the campaign on a sour note.
