FC Barcelona to have 22 representatives at Rio Olympic Games

The Club will have sports persons in football, basketball, handball, athletics, field hockey and rugby 7

The Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro are fast approaching, and FC Barcelona will be well-presented at the global event, with 22 participants across the various sports.

Football

Neymar Jr and Rafinha will be representing Brazil as hosts and favourites in the football category. Recent transfer for FC Barcelona Women, Andressa Alves, will also compete.

Basketball

Juan Carlos Navarro, who won silver medals in 2008 and 2012, will take part in his fifth games. The Spanish side will also be joined by new signing Victor Claver. Barça man Shane Lawal is also on the way to Brazil.

Handball

Despite Spain not qualifying for this category, Barça will have representatives: Wael Jallouz (Tunisia), Kamil Spyrzak (Poland), Jesper Noddesbo and Lasse Andersson (Denmark) and French duo Cedric Sorhaindo and Timothey N'Guessan. The latter and the Dane Andersson joined Barça this summer.

Athletics

Ilias Fifa (5,000 metres), José Ignacio Diaz Velazquez (50 km walk), Carlos Tobalina (shot put), Jean Marie Okutu Kouleitio (long jump), Caridad Jérez Castellano (100 metres hurdles), Raquel González (20 km walk) and Sabina Asenjo (discuss).

Xavi Porras will take part in the paralympics, competing in the long jump on 8 September.

Rugby 7

Rugby has not featured at the Olympics since 1924 in France. At Rio de Janeiro, in the seven-a-side format, it is back and with the presence of two Barça players Joan Losada and Pol Pla, who will be representing Spain.

Field hockey

Miquel Delàs, who plays for the Spanish national team, will be competing in his second games after featuring in 2012 in London. The Barça man plays in Belgium for Royal Antwerp since 2012 but was formed by the club between three and 22 years of age and, whenever he can, defends the Barça badge in indoor hockey.
