Athletic Club 0-2 Barça: Not without difficulties

Two late goals from Alexia and Vicky keep the winning spree alive

Not without a lot of difficulty, Barça have overcome Athletic Club thanks to two late goals from Alexia and Vicky, thus keeping alive the 100 per cent record in the Liga F.

Back at San Mamés, the same place where the team won a third Champions League not so long ago, Barça faced one of the toughest games of the season, a stark contrast to the last three games in which they scored six goals each time.

Although Barça were generally dominating, they were ever so fortunate not to be trailing after the Basques hit the post twice in rapid succession, and as the game progressed, the inevitability of an away win was fading. Athletic were putting up a solid performance indeed.

With half an hour to go and things still somewhat stagnant, coach Pere Romeu opted to send on Alexia and Pajor in the hope that they could stir things up a little. But two great chances for Aitana and Vicky, and two equally great saves by home keeper Nanclares, meant it started to look more and more like the Catalans were about to drop their first points of the season.

But Alexia Putellas had other plans, and in the very last minute of regular time, she decisively found the net. And shortly after, Vicky López pounced on a rebound to add a loft in a second. It had been the narrowest of escapes, but Barça had snatched the win right at the final gasp.
