Manchester City thump Borussia Mönchengladbach (4-0)

Pep Guardiola's side get off to a fine start in the Champions League with Sergio Agüero firing a hat-trick past the Bundesliga side

After Barça had routed Celtic 7-0 the night before, Wednesday produced another lop-sided encounter between the other two sides in Champions League Group C. In a game that started 24 hours later than scheduled after being rained off on Tuesday, Manchester City put four past visitors Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sergio Agüero, who had already scored a hat-trick in qualifying against Steaua Bucharest, was the hero again with another three goals. The first was a cool conversion of an Aleksandar Kolarov cross after just eight minutes, the second was an equally composed conversion of a penalty as the half-hour mark approached and after 77 minutes the Argentinian made it three by completing a counter attack by rounding Borussia keeper Sommer in style. His own replacement late in the game, Kelechi Iheanacho finished off the job by rifling home off a Sané assist.

With most of their fans already back in Germany by the time this game finally got started, it was a tough start to the campaign for Borussia, who will be entertaining early group leaders Barça in the next game on September 28. Meanwhile, Man City’s perfect start to their first season under Pep Guardiola continues, and next up for them in their Champions League quest is a visit to Celtic Park.
