André Gomes: 'We want to beat PSG in order to be under less pressure in the return leg'

The Portuguese midfielder is wary of PSG's 'fantastic players with real quality' who deserve our respect, especially at their home ground

André Gomes expects a difficult match on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes. In the pre-match press conference the midfielder had a clear objective: to win the first leg against PSG away so that “the return leg will be more comfortable” at the Camp Nou.

The Barça midfielder highlighted how dangerous the team from Paris will be: “PSG have great players and lots of quality. They have singed well in the winter transfer window. Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn’t there anymore but Edinson Cavani is and he has scored lots of goals.”

Furthermore, he praised their “strong midfield and complete team who have comfortably won their last few league titles.” However, the Portugal international seemed up for the challenge: “they are playing at home so we need to respect them but we want to win.”

Regarding his performances in a Barça shirt, whether as a defensive midfielder or on either side of the midfield, Gomes said he “has never felt better”. He spoke of the opportunity to learn from players he admires, like Rakitic or Iniesta, day after day.

When asked who he is most similar to Andrés Gomes gave a confident answer: “I would like to have my own style. I am a mix of the two because no players play like Rakitic does or have Iniesta’s skills. They are great players and I need to grow with them.”
