Robert Fernández to decide next FC Barcelona coach

The first team’s technical secretary cast his eye over the side’s current position, Luis Enrique’s replacement and contract extensions

Barça are focused on the final few months of the league campaign and behind the scenes work is also going on with regards to the Club’s future. The technical secretary for the first team Robert Fernández spoke to Catalan radio station SER Catalunya on Monday where he touched on the topic of Barça’s next coach following the departure of Luis Enrique at the end of the season and contract extensions for key members of the squad.

“I will decide the next coach,” assured Fernández, before going on to add that it would be a decision that would be agreed upon by the president and the Board of Directors whilst maintaining that it would be a personal decision also.

The former Barça player reviewed the virtues of some of the names that have appeared in the press as possible successors to Luis Enrique such as his current assistant Juan Carlos Unzué. “He’s a good option as he knows the Club well, the players and the system. He is someone who is prepared and knows where he is,” commented Fernández.

Another possible candidate according to the media is current Athletic Club boss Ernesto Valverde. The first team technical secretary knows him well as they played together at Barça between 1988 and 1990. “He has had good seasons, at Athletic and other clubs; he is a serious character and a good coach,” said Fernández of his former team mate.

The technical secretary is negotiating discreetly and he referred to two key contract extensions for the Club: those of Andrés Iniesta and Leo Messi. On the midfielder Robert Fernández asserted: “I can’t imagine Barça without Iniesta, he can’t either.”

As for Messi, he added: “Leo is happy in Barcelona and he is in a magnificent team.” In both cases, Fernández was optimistic: “Iniesta and Messi will sign new contracts, I don’t have any doubt.”
