Messi's Argentina draw in Colombia

The 'albiceleste' pick up a point in Barranquilla in the World Cup qualifier after going two goals up in the first half

An Argentina side featuring Leo Messi were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in Barranquilla in a World Cup qualifier for the 2022 tournament. The game began well for Lionel Scaloni's team with goals from Cristian Romero and Leandro Paredes putting them 2-0 up after just eight minutes.

However, despite Messi being on the field for all 90 minutes, in the second half Colombia mounted a comeback. Muriel pulled one back from the penalty spot and in the last minute of injury time local lad Borja salvaged a point for los cafeteros.

'Kun' Agüero was an unused substitute in the draw which leaves Argentina in second place on CONMEBOL qualifying, six points behind leaders Brazil but three points ahead of third place Ecuador.

In other South American qualifiers, Barça's new signing Emerson failed to get on the field in Brazil's 2-0 win away at Paraguay which maintains their 100% record in qualification. Similarly, there was no playing time for Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo in the 0-0 draw away at Venezuela which keeps them in fourth place in the group and still in the hunt for a place in the 2022 World Cup.
