USA beats Mexico in extra time to win the first ever edition of the tournament

Sergiño Dest has won his first senior international title with the USMNT. His side defeated Mexico in Sunday’s final at the Empower Field at Mile High, with Dest starting the game.

Managed by former Barça boss Tata Martino, ‘El Tri’ took a first minute lead through Tecatito Corona but Gio Reyna pulled the US level just before the half.hour mark.

Diego Lainez looked to have won it for Mexico ten minutes from the end, but a quick response from McKennie sent the game into extra time.

A Pulisic penalty gave the US an overtime lead, but Mexico had one last chance with a last-minute penalty. Guardado missed and the first Concacaf Nations Cup was won by the United States, who reached the Final Four by beating Cuba and Canada and then eliminated Honduras in the semis.

It’s a big summer for the teams in North, Central and Caribbean America, with the Concacaf Gold Cup also on the way, starting on July 10.
