Messi scores fourth 'Panenka' penalty

The Argentine scores his 700th goal as a professional with a masterful penalty made famous by the Czech footballer in the 1970s

Lionel Messi never stops to amaze. Against Atlético Madrid the Argentine scored the fourth 'Panenka' style penalty of his career, his first coming back in 2015 against Getafe at Camp Nou.

Since then three more have been added to the Messi archives: against Villarreal in 2016/17, Olympique Lyonnais in 2018/19 and on Tuesday against Atlético Madrid, Leo's 700th goal as a professiona.

Panenka: 'Messi is a role model'

The last time Barça visited the Czech Republic, Barça TV searched out Antonin Panenka, the former Czechoslovakia international who trademarked this style of penalty with his famous goal in the 1976 European Championships final against West Germany.

Panenka is a big Messi fan as he explained in an interview with the Club's official TV channel: 'I admire him for a lot of reasons. He is a role model for young players and he just focuses on football." The Czech football legend added proudly, 'I can say to people that Messi copied my penalty.' Something he can say again today.
