De Jong: a blaugrana birthday

On Tuesday the Barça midfielder celebrates his 23rd birthday and we take the chance to look back at his first year in Barcelona

On 12 May 1997 Frenkie de Jong was born in Arkel in the Netherlands. Now, 23 years later the Dutch midfielder celebrates his birthday in Barcelona after almost a year as a Barça player. The Holland international has settled in well at the Club since his arrival in the summer of 2019, although his signing was announced back in January of the same year

Since becoming an FC Barcelona player the midfielder has played 37 games for the blaugranes and along with Antoine Griezmann, De Jong has made most appearances for Barça this season. In terms of minutes played (2,919), he is only behind Ter Stegen, Griezmann and Piqué.

De Jong has also shown his prowess attacking from midfield and he has scored twice this season, both in the league. The first came in the win at Camp Nou over Valencia and the second in the away victory at Betis.

During his first season, De Jong has been a fixture in the team for both Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setién, playing in various positions in the starting XI thanks to his versatility. Already in his debut campaign as a blaugrana, Frenkie de Jong has shown just why he is rated as one of the best young midfielders in Europe.
