De Jong and Ter Stegen clash in EURO 2020 qualifying

De Jong and Ter Stegen clash in EURO 2020 qualifying

Barça stars on opposite sides as the Dutch travel to Hamburg for Thursday's high-profile encounter

After three weeks of La Liga action comes the first international break of the season, and with that comes the latest set of Euro 2020 qualifiers, plus some friendlies.

Thursday 5 September

Romania 1-2 Spain

Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets played all ninety minutes as Spain won 2-1 in Romania. Former Barça player and future opponent in the Champions League Paco Alcácer, scored the second goal of the night, off an assist from Alba, after Sergio Ramos had opened the scoring from the penalty spot. The home side pulled one goal back through Florin Andone.

With five wins out of five, Spain are now five points clear of second placed Sweden and well on course for a berth in the finals. Next up is a home fixture against the Faroe Islands on September 8 (Gijon, 8.45pm CET).

Friday 6 September

Germany v Holland (Hamburg, 8.45pm CET)

One of the biggest rivalries in international football also brings a face-off between Barça stars. Marc Andre ter Stegen features for the home side against Frenkie de Jong. Germany won when these sides met earlier in the year in Amsterdam, and with Northern Ireland in fine form, the Dutch could really do with the points here.

Saturday 7 September

France v Albania (Paris, 8.45pm CET)

The world champions lost earlier in the year in Turkey, and those two sides and Iceland are currently tied at the top of Group H. With Samuel Umtiti called into the side as an injury replacement, France entertain Albania on Saturday

Serbia v Portugal (Belgrade, 8.45pm CET)

They may have won the UEFA Nations League but Nelson Semedo’s side have yet to win in Euro 2020 qualifying. Serbia held them to a 1-1 draw in Lisbon and now the sides meet again in Belgrade. Ukraine are currently well clear at the top of Group B.

Brazil v Colombia (Miami, 8.30pm local, 2.30am CET)

Arthur Was already at the Hard Rock Stadium just a month ago on the US Tour, although he didn’t feature in the match with Napoli, and is now back at the home of the Dolphins for this international friendly.
