FC Barcelona U19A win fourth Copa de Campeones

An 11-year wait is over as the youth team are crowned champions of Spain with a victory over Athletic Club

The Barça U19A team are Spanish champions for the fourth time, ending an 11 year wait going back to 2010/11. In Saturday’s final they beat Athletic Club 2-0 in the final at Ciudad Del Fútbol de Las Rozas (Madrid), the goals scored by Àlex Valle y Fermín.

In a perfect Copa de Campeones, they beat Valencia 2-0 in a single-leg quarter final at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, then Celta 4.3 in a thriller of a semi before seeing off the Basques to claim the title.

It was the perfect way to make up for the disappointment defeat to Deportivo La Coruña in last year’s final.

Previous wins

Barça had not won this trophy since they beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the final of 2010/11, a side including such future stars as Rafinha, Deulofeu, Jesús Unzué and Espinosa.

In 2008/09, Marc Bartra, Marc Muniesa, Montoya, Ilie, Oriol Romeo, Adrià Carmona and Rochina featured in a squad that beat Celta 2-0, and Víctor Vázquez, Marc Valiente and Pitu helped beat Sporting Gijón 3-1 in 2004/05.

Second all-time

The fourth victory moves the Catalan closer in the all-time honours list to Real Madrid, who have been champions a record seven times.

Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Málaga, Atlético Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña have all won it twice, and there have been single victories for Espanyol, Valencia, Sporting Gijón, Villarreal, Real Zaragoza and Osasuna.
