New turf at Camp Nou

Grass from the finest nurseries in Europe being hybridised ready for the start of play in late July

This Tuesday the work began to replace the hybrid grass in the Camp Nou for the 2021/22 season, a job that in recent years has been done every summer (the last change was in August 2020) so as to offer the first team the best possible playing surface during the season. The pitch needs to be ready for the Joan Gamper Trophy in the last week of July and the start of the official fixtures shortly after.

The turf replacement operation follows on from constant monitoring of meteorological, climatic and other indicators. Work begins with the removal of the topsoil, roots, fibres and sand. Some of this sand is reused and mixed with a new one offering the right agronomic and mechanical qualities.

After levelling the base, new sods are put in place at night due to the optimal temperature and humidity conditions. These are then hybridised by being sewn by state-of-the-art machines. This is followed by other tasks like fertilizer review and administration.

Fifth hybrid season

The Camp Nou grass is of the highest quality and is selected from various nurseries throughout Europe in accordance with FC Barcelona's strict requirements. It is transported to Barcelona in refrigerated trucks that travel by day so the turf can be lain that same night to minimise stress  and avoid the hottest times of day. This means that only about 2,000 m2 of turf can be postitioned per day, but ensures perfect adaptation.

The Camp Nou has used a hybrid grass since the 2016/17 season. This system complements 100% natural grass by offering better grip and a more stable playing surface throughout the year, thus conferring the ideal conditions for playing football.
