Barça basketball coach Xavi Pascual spoke to the media on Thursday to explain his decision not to continue on the blaugrana bench beyond the end of the current season.

Pascual informed the club of his decision the afternoon before and used today's press conference to address the situation publicly. Also present were FC Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste, director Sisco Pujol, presidential advisor Enric Masip, director of professional sports Xavier O’Callaghan, basketball advisor Jordi Trias, section general manager Juan Carlos Navarro, technical secretary Mario Bruno Fernández and honorary member Manolo Flores.

“I can’t lose with Barça”

Pascual explained that his decision came after a long period of reflection and was closely linked to the emotional toll of the season. “Defeats don’t allow me to be myself" he said. "I can’t lose with Barça, and that’s what has worn me down.”

He acknowledged that his high level of self-demand had been a decisive factor in stepping away from the project. He also stressed that the decision was made with the best interests of everyone involved in mind: “I don’t want to become a problem for the future. I believe this decision will be good for everyone. Everybody will benefit.”

The coach also underlined his deep connection to the club and his enduring Barça identity. “My barcelonismo remains intact. Coaching Barça is the highest level you can reach. I have always wanted to put Barça at the very top.”

In harmony from day one

Pascual was keen to make clear from the outset that his departure has nothing to do with any conflict inside the club. “There is no war between Barça and me. The relationship is extraordinary and my barcelonismo is intact.”

Along the same lines, he stated that “there has been no problem with the sporting management” and praised the working relationship he shared with basketball executives Navarro and Bruno from the first day to the last.

On the sporting side, the coach highlighted that "the team is full of desire to end the season well. Many of us won’t continue, but we want to enjoy one last dance and win these play-offs.”

Pascual ended his appearance with a heartfelt message to the Palau Blaugrana supporters. “I feel so much for the fans. I can never be grateful enough for the support they’ve shown me. I ask that the Palau continues just as it has until now.”
