From start to finish. FC Barcelona dominated Sunday's clash against Gran Canaria across the full forty minutes and ultimately sealed an emphatic 91–69 victory. The second win in a row helps the blaugrana continue to build positive momentum in the final stretch ahead of the play-offs.
Punter the killer
Barça had already shown at the Buesa Arena that their European elimination was behind them, and back at the Palau they underlined it once again. Despite a long list of absentees (Clyburn, Vesely, Satoransky, Laprovittola and Kusturica) the rest stepped up. First and foremost, and in spectacular fashion, was Kevin Punter, who scored Barça’s first nine points and 15 of their opening 17.
After closing out a strong first quarter (29–18), Núñez and Willy delivered valuable minutes, with Brizuela taking on Punter’s scoring role. All the while, a quiet but efficient Shengelia kept stretching the lead (40–26), threatening to break the game open before half-time.
Flyaway winners
A three-pointer and a buzzer-beater left the game firmly in Barça’s control at the break (48–34). Although the opening points after the restart took a little time to come, Shengelia and Willy continued to do damage in the paint. Neither timeouts nor substitutions could halt a Barça side firing on all cylinders.
Fluid in attack and fully locked in defensively, the minutes ticked down towards a second consecutive league win. With strong contributions from Fall in the second half, and minutes as well for the two junior call-ups, Sayon Keita and Dani González, the Palau crowd enjoyed an excellent team performance.
Full focus on the league
Now, with the league as their sole focus and a less congested schedule, Barça are showing they have plenty of weapons to believe they can beat anyone once the play-offs arrive. For now, five regular-season games remain to build momentum and recover players. Next test: once again at the Palau, against San Pablo Burgos next Saturday at 6pm CET.
