The Scotiabank sponsorship deal is the first agreement to be settled at the New York office since it was opened last September

FC Barcelona and Scotiabank of Canada have reached a sponsorship agreement for the next three seasons that was celebrated at three simultaneous events in Mexico City, Lima and Santiago attended by Arno Tabresinger, the director of the New York office; Maria Vallès, the director general of the FC Barcelona Foundation, and former Barça players Luis García, Hugo 'Cholo' Sotil and Gaizka Mendieta.

The agreement was signed in three different cities. The venue in Mexico was the World Trade Center and featured Luis García at an event hosted by sports presenter Luis Omar Tapia. In Lima, Peru it was Hugo 'Cholo' Sotil who represented the club, and in Santiago, Chile, legendary midfielder Gaizka Mendieta was the star guest.

The agreement will be valid until the 2018/19 season and may be extended for a further two years. Part of the financial payment made by Scotiabank to FC Barcelona will be used to implement the 'FutbolNet' programme that the club and its Foundation have been developing since 2011.

What is ‘FutbolNet’?

'FutbolNet' is an educational methodology aimed at children aged between 8 and 16 that are at risk of social exclusion and which uses soccer as an instrument for transmitting values whereby the game is used as the basis for dialogue. The programmes works on five core principles: respect, teamwork, effort, ambition and humility. The sessions are divided into three parts: a discussion before the game in which it is the participants themselves who decide the rules of the game and analyse the key values that they are working on; a soccer match; and a post-game chat in which the participants’ behaviour is assessed. Dialogue thereby becomes a part of the game, and not just a complement.
