Barça Women A continue to make history. This Saturday they won yet another trophy, beating Athletic Bilbao in the Queen’s Cup Final, in a penalty shoot-out. The 90 minutes ended 0-0, and in extra time Alexia put Barça ahead only for Nekane to equalise for the Bilbao outfit. In the penalty shoot-out Barça scored all their penalties, and Ràfols saved the second Basque effort to win the title for Xavi Llorens’ girls.

Competitive start

The final started predictably, with Barça dominating the game and Athletic looking to counter attack. Erika, with her pace was the major Basque offensive threat, but the Barça central defenders comfortably handled any dangerous situations. Xavi Llorens’ players, meanwhile, used the wings a lot and Alexia was a continual threat

The clearest chance of the first half fell to Alexia, with a long free kick on the half hour. The Athletic goalkeeper Ainhoa made a great save to prevent the 1-0. That was the only real goal chance in the whole of the first half

Outstanding Ràfols

The second half was better to watch. Barça’s combination play was matched by Athletic, who went looking for the first goal. Barça keeper Ràfols was forced into two very important saves, the first from a low shot by Murúa, and shortly another good save from Irene.

With Athletic on the front foot, Barça were limited to counter-attacks, but the best chance of the half fell to the Basque outfit, and Rafòls was forced into a tremendous save from a Flaviano free-kick

Extra Time, goals, and victory on penalties

As the minutes ticked by, and fatigue began to take its toll, both sides were more keen to not concede a goal than to go on all out attack. Thus, the scoreline stayed at 0-0, and the match went into extra time.

In extra time, Barça looked fitter, and went ahead early on with an Alexia shot into the bottom corner. Their joy was short-lived, though, as four minutes later Nekane surprised Rafòls with a cross shot make it 1-1. Both teams went looking for the winning goal, but it just wouldn’t come.

So, the game went into the dreaded penalty shoot-out, with Barça coming out on top. Marta Unzué, Corredera, Laura Gómez, Jenni, and finally Alexia all scored from the spot, and Ràfols saved Athletic’s second effort. With this win, Barça pick up the fourth Spanish Queen’s Cup in the club’s history, and, thanks to Xavi Llorens, continues making history
