The FC Barcelona women’s team played an exciting match this Friday against Lezama. The fans packed the grounds to see if FC Barcelona would take the first ‘match ball’ of the season and claim the title. The quality of both sides was made very evident as the women battled it out in a very intense match. The players led by Xavi Llorens were not able to take the three points in their match against the second place team of the League.

Early goal

The game didn’t start off on the best foot for Barça. In the first minute, the referee called a penalty against Barça, Dura did well to net the opener from the spot. After the first goal, Barça increased their intensity and rhythm of play. Even though Athletic Club were playing a very tight game, leaving very little space to play, Míriam - who was one of the best home side players - ripped a long-distance shot that went in the upper 90° of Athletic’s goal. Athletic created numerous goal scoring chances from corners and crosses into the area, and, finally, one of them ended in a goal. Nekane scored the second goal for her side, even though Sarasola appealed for a possible hand ball previous to the shot. With 2-1 on the board, Barça once again took the initiative and pressured throughout the rest of the first half.

Own goal

The first 20 minutes of the second half  were marked by Athletic Club’s dominance. The Basque side were incisive on offence, which put the Catalans on the back foot. However, Barça’s defence stood strong and Sarasola’s excellent work in goal saved Erika’s goal-bound shot. Unfortunately, on 64 minutes, Flaviano headed in a shot that was simply unstoppable for Sarasola. Barça looked for the goal that would give them the draw, and the chances slowly started to come for the Catalan side. Three minutes later, Irene cleared the ball off the line for Athletic Club. Xavi Llorens’ players didn’t give up. On 44 minutes, Carol unleashed a shot from the left wing that crashed into the woodwork. When everything looked like it would end in 2-1, Ani scored an own goal. It was 3-1; shortly after the referee blew the final whistle.

With three matches to play in the Liga, FC Barcelona’s Women’s team continue atop the table with a three-point advantage over Athletic Club. The Basque side, however, have the goal differential tie breaker in their favour. Xavi Llorens’ players will not be able to win the title next week when they face Espanyol.
