Carles Planas has started the new season on form. Last week, Eusebio Sacristán used the Barça B left back in the middle of the defence, and the canterano has responded brilliantly.

Center back against Sabadell

Planas trotted out onto the pitch against Sabadell and played in an unfamiliar position. The left back, who usually goes forward when his team goes on the attack, lined up in the center of Barça B’s defence. Despite his unfamiliarity with the center back position, Planas put in a brilliant 90-minute performance. “I notice the change the most when we attack, as a left back I’m used to helping the team when we go forward. However, as a center back you are responsible for starting the play; making the first pass,” he said.

On the other hand, he’s aware that playing in the middle of the defence implies that he must change his approach to the game: “I have to be aware of where I place myself on the pitch, I have to be closer to their strikers and try to stop them from getting a shot off.”

An important player

Barça B’s number 5 has showed that he can be an important player for FC Barcelona’s reserve side. Despite his red card in the first match of the season, and subsequently missing out on the mini-Clásico against Real Madrid Castilla, his performances have been notable. In fact, he featured in three of the first team’s pre-season matches (against Hamburg, Raja Club Athletic and Paris Saint-Germain), and Tito Vilanova named Planas to the starting line-up for the match at the Parc des Princes.

Two future first-team left backs

Planas shares his position with another budding Barça B star, Alex Grimaldo. Grimaldo, 16, was promoted to Barça B at the beginning of the summer. The two left backs, both of whom are tactically gifted and talented on the ball, are an ideal fit for the style of play employed by FC Barcelona.
