[[DES_1]]The Gasol brothers have been named for the first time in the starting five for the NBA All Star game that will take place in New York in February. The Chicago Bulls player Pau Gasol and the Memphis Grizzlies' Marc Gasol will be just two of the stars in the spectacular duel that returns to Madison Square Garden after an absence of 17 years. The clash will pit the two siblings against each other - Pau with the Eastern Conference and Marc with the Western Conference - in an echo of the 1970 and 1971 All Star games which saw the Van Arsdale twins come up against one another.

Furthermore, it will be the first time in history that two players who began their careers with FC Barcelona meet in a game which is only within the reach of the very best players in the NBA. Pau Gasol was a blaugrana between 1996 and 2001, whilst Marc wore the Barça shirt from 1998 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2006.

Previous All Star experience

For both Pau and Marc it will not be the first time that they have been selected to play in the All Star game. The Chicago Bulls' centre has featured on three occasions: in 2009 in Houston, in 2009 in Phoenix and 2010 in Dallas. On all three occasions he started on the bench. Marc Gasol took part in the All Star game in 2012 which was played in Orlando.

Great season

The two former Barça players are both having excellent seasons with their respective teams and therefore their selection for the contest comes as no surprise. With the Bulls, Pau Gasol is averaging 18.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game with the Chicago team sitting in fourth place in the Western Conference.
Marc Gasol's Memphis Grizzlies occupy third place in the league and his own stats are equally as impressive: 19.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game tell their own story for the younger of the two brothers.

Impressive voting figures

The votes for the All Star teams were made public on Thursday in the USA and demonstrate the Gasol brothers' current excellent form. Pau received 974,177 votes, whilst Marc 795,121 votes, figures that allow them to be in the starting five of the contest for the very first time. In the Western Conference, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, John Wall and Kyle Lowry will accompany Pau Gasol in the starting five. In the West Marc Gasol will line up with Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, Anthony Davis and Blake Griffin.
